Ceremony
Home Text Box: We have chosen St. Bartholomew’s in Moreton Corbet for the wedding ceremony. It is a small Church near Shawbury, 10 miles north of the centre of Shrewsbury, with a small and friendly local congregation. Services are led in alternate weeks by the Rev. David Humphries, also known on the internet as ’DaveTheRev@hotmail.com’. Like all old churches, it’s colder on the inside than the weather outdoors, so bring your thermal undies just in case!
Next to St. Bartholomew’s are the remains of Moreton Corbet Castle, part of which dates back to the 13th Century. According to the BBC website the castle was built by Bartholomew Toret, head of an old Saxon family who had won favour with the Norman kings. Unfortunately for Toret, the good luck didn't last. He upset King John and was thrown into jail in 1215. In 1239 his heiress married Richard Corbet, a Norman lord, and the castle passed into the hands of the Corbet family, who still own it. In fact we are very grateful to the Corbet ancestry since they built the church, the ruins for our photos and Acton Reynolds, the venue for our reception.
Most of what remains today was built by Robert Corbet who was a favourite in the court of Elizabeth I, and who travelled extensively throughout Europe, bringing back architectural ideas modelled on the buildings of ancient Rome. When he died his brother Vincent took over the building. Vincent is at the centre of Morton Corbet’s very own ghost story - the Puritan's Curse! Fear of the curse apparently stopped him and his son Andrew from ever living there. So be warned!!!
